High School Yearbooks (also called “Annuals”) are the “Cultural Time Capsules” of local society focusing on who they were at a pivotal moment in their lives.

Most high school yearbooks follow a standardized format:

  • The Theme: A central concept hat dictates the book’s visual design, fonts, and tone.
  • The People (Portraits): Rows of standardized “mugshots” sorted by grade. Seniors usually receive larger portraits and “Senior Quotes,” while underclassmen are grouped in smaller boxes.
  • Student Life: A section for candid photos showing students in their “natural habitat”—hallways, lunchrooms, and parking lots.
  • Academics: Photos of students in classrooms, science labs, or art studios, often used to showcase the school’s facilities.
  • Organizations & Sports: Group photos of clubs (Chess, Drama, Honor Society) and athletic teams, usually accompanied by season records or “action shots.”
  • The Index: A meticulous alphabetical list at the back, cross-referencing every page number where a specific student appears.

To a historian or genealogist, a yearbook is a “Primary Source” that provides data points other records miss:

  • Visual Evolution: They are the ultimate record of changing hairstyles, fashion trends (from 1950s letterman jackets to 1990s grunge), and even the evolution of the “American smile” (which became wider and more frequent over the decades).
  • Social Connections: Unlike a census, a yearbook shows an individual’s social network. Seeing which clubs someone joined or who they sat next to in the band photo provides a deep look into their personality.
  • Cultural Context: Yearbooks often include a “Year in Review” page, documenting global events (wars, moon landings, pandemics) through the eyes of teenagers.

The History Room has a large collection of Clear Lake High School Year Books beginning in 1909 including every year from 1946 through 2024, except 1986 and 2019.  Some volumes are available to check out so you can prepare for the upcoming high school reunion.

Below is a list of the Year Book Holdings.  LH indicates Library History Room and HS indicates Historical Society.  If there are 2 copies noted in the LH column, one copy can be checked out.
