Col. Ubbelohde in Army Corps of Engineers
A 1975 CLHS graduate, Kurt F. Ubbelohde earned an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1979. Kurt went on to earn his Master’s degree in Physics at the University of California, San Diego, and a second Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle, PA. He is also a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, Armed Forces Staff College, Ranger and Airborne Schools. He has attained the rank of Colonel.
Colonel Ubbelohde is currently Commander and District Engineer for the Corps of Engineers, Gulf Region North District. Prior to this service in Iraq, he served as the Commander and District Engineer for the Omaha District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, beginning in August of 2001.
In his position in the Omaha District, he oversaw federal civil works activities, including administration of the Clean Water Act program as it impacted the upper Missouri River basin, engineering design and construction in eight states, and hazardous, toxic and radioactive waste cleanup work for the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Defense at sites throughout the U.S.
His career in the Corps of Engineers to date has also included serving as the Chief, Construction Programs Division for the Deputy Chief of Staff, Engineering, Headquarters, U.S. Army, Europe, in Heidelberg, Germany; command and staff positions at Camp Humphries, Korea, Ford Ord, California, Fort Drum, New York, and Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Staff Officer and Military Assistant to the Director, Defense Nuclear Agency, Alexandria, Virginia; and Chief, Nuclear Operations Branch, Joint Staff (J3) Pentagon.
For his service, Colonel Ubbelohde has received the following military awards and decorations: Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Join Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
Kurt’s mother Dorothy continues to live in Clear Lake; his father, who served as pastor at the Congregational Church, is deceased. Col. Ubbelohde and his wife Jean have three children: Zachary, Mallory and Abigail.
