Old cars capture our imagination. We harken back to a simpler more refined era. But was it?

The first cars required the owner to crank hard to get them to start. Many an arm fell victim to the crank. Without a windshield the riders shared their journey with insects and random birds. Winter presented new challenges in surviving the bitter cold without forced heat. Unimproved roads stirred up dust and rocks.

The romance of the open road and horseless carriage still beaconed. Cars slowly improved over time.

These photos from the Clear Lake Public Library History collection showcase some early autos in town. The cars themselves seem to have their own distinct personalities.

As liveries responded to the changing needs, auto repair shops sprung up.
