Why Volunteer with the Historical Society

Volunteering with the Historical Society is a meaningful way to give back while preserving Clear Lake’s unique heritage. As a volunteer, you’ll gain hands-on experience with historical collections, meet people who share your interests, and help bring local stories to life through events, exhibits, and programs. Whether you enjoy research, guiding visitors, or supporting community projects, your time and talents make a lasting difference.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Clear Lake Historical Society

Curating

Assist the museum director and archivist, who acquires diverse historical records and archives that have been accepted in accordance with the acquisition policy of the Clear Lake Historical Society.  Curating involves involvement in the permanent displays and collections at the museum.

Docent

Willingness to field questions concerning displays and collections that are curated. Provide information and field questions regarding Clear Lake history.  This would also include helping patrons learn how to navigate the joint Clear Lake Public Library History Room and Clear Lake Historical Society website so that information can be gleaned from a variety of collections.

Cemetary

Willingness to assist in the maintenance of the kiosk at the Clear Lake    Cemetery which helps visitors to the cemetery find the graves of loved ones or researchers.  This would include updating the list of burials by working with the Clear Lake City Clerk and ability to use “Find a Grave” and newspaper archives.

Genealogy

Willingness to help patrons learn how to use Ancestry.com and/or assist with specific questions regarding the families and their history in Clear Lake.

Building

Join the team of people who currently make sure that the exterior of the building is kept clean and inviting to guests.  This could also include “handyman” skills.

Exhibits

Assist the director and archivists in the creation of mobile exhibits which are rotated within the museum to complement the permanent exhibits
